Letter from James Fair, church warden of the union of Neal, Clonbur, Cong, [County Mayo], to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, concerning an irregularity in appointing church wardens in his parish. Stating that he was elected along with George Rogers by the parishioners at a special vestry meeting but that Rev John Ashe, rector, subsequently appointed John Flanagan, his tithe proctor, to the position. Observing that the parishioners of Ballanacalla and Kilonolary have held special vestry meetings at which they failed to agree with the rector and that they wish to invoke the compulsory clause contained in legislation. Mentioning that he is land agent to the earls of Charlemont and Leitrim. Includes legal opinion of Richard W Greene, noting that if the rector formerly had the right to appoint wardens, he continues to have this right under the new legislation. |
