Petition of Thomas Burke, Kilmore, County Roscommon, to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, seeking an impartial review of his eviction from land which he held from the Waldron family. Claiming that he was forcibly ejected from his house by Francis Waldron and his men having being granted permission to do so by magistrates at the Petty Sessions at Clogher. Stating that he held the property from the late Vaughan Waldron of Ashfort for 17 years and that Col Clayde of Rockfield and the Rev Dean of Elphin would allow him a fair trial.

Letter from W Miller, Clonmel, [County Tipperary], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, reporting that a number of sub constables were required by the sub sheriff to remove and bury the bodies of individuals who were hung at the gaol and adding that the men felt that they were put upon improperly. Warning that the ‘office of Constable should not be degraded in the estimation of the People’. Includes annotation and brief memorandum noting that this is not part of the duty of a constable and that a letter is to be addressed to the sheriff.

Letter from AHC Pollock, magistrate, Mountainstown, [County Meath], to Capt Henderson, recommending that the party of constables who have been temporarily stationed at Newcastle remain in that station; noting that they have recovered stolen horses and have prevented illegal distillation; offering to build a barracks for their accommodation. Also letter from John Henderson, Navan, [County Meath], to Col Sir John Harvey, Inspector General, noting that the men were stationed there following a threatening notice sent to the catholic clergyman at Moynalty concerning retaliation against evictions. Also covering letter from Harvey, 9 Ely Place, Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, noting that the other magistrates of the area should be consulted.

Noting that his father served in the constabulary. Includes annotation noting that the regulations cannot be interfered with.

Letter from Thomas McCullen, 149 James Street, [Dublin] and Ferbane, [Kings County or County Offaly], to Col Gosett, Dublin Castle and William Gregory, Under Secretary, noting that he is facing intimidation having sought to testify against an individual, named Caughlon, who is suspected of posting threatening Rockite notices against his brother, Hugh McCullen. Noting that Caughlon was not convicted at Philipstown [Daingean] assizes. Seeking a reply to an earlier petition and noting that he served as a sergeant in the 87th Regiment of Foot. Also letter from Piers Geale, crown solicitor, 12 Mountjoy Square West, [Dublin], to Gregory, noting that the case against [Coghlan] was not strong enough to proceed with and agreeing with McCullen’s concerns over his safety.

Noting that he served as a sergeant in the Galway Regiment of Militia and was known to the recipient while in that company.

Noting that his son had been promised the position and as a result refused an offer of a mercantile nature in America. Adding that he served in the late Athenry Corps of Yeomanry.
