Noting that the town has over 11000 inhabitants but that normally the highest civil authority resident in the town is a sergeant of police. Mentioning the names of magistrates in the nearby county side and observing that Rev Grady occasionally occupies his residence in the town. Includes annotation [probably from William Gregory, Under Secretary] noting how a police magistrate can be applied for. |

Includes copy of document from the ‘Loyal Brothers of Dungarvan’ empowering Kirby to act as their delegate and urging unity amongst the coopers of Cork, Limerick, Waterford and all Ireland. Memorial of James Anderson, Woodpark, County Mayo, to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, complaining that the magistrates of Ballina have refused to attend to his complaints concerning the collection of tolls and nuisances committed on the high streets of the town. Reporting that he was violently attacked by a mob while attempting to collect the tolls and customs of Ballina, which he is entitled to under a lease from the Earl of Arran. Includes copy of affidavit from Anderson noting that householders of the town have installed cranes and hooks outside their doors which hawkers use to sell their wares on market days thereby defeating the object and purpose of a fair and legal market. Includes legal opinion of Richard W Greene and Henry Joy, Attorney General, noting that this is a matter for the Kings Bench or Lord Chancellor. |
