File of documents concerning an application for repair of a damaged pier at Glandore, Rosscarbery in County Cork. Includes letter from Rev J Power, parish priest, Rosscarbery, to Edward Geoffrey Smith Stanley, Chief Secretary, referring to an earlier petition signed by almost 200 parishioners and reiterating their appeal for assistance from government to repair the pier at Glandore. Also includes letter from William Searight, secretary, Navigation Office, [11 Merrion Street, Dublin], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, noting the storm damage to the pier on the 5th of December 1830 but regretting the relevant statute does not permit advancing of funds for the maintenances of harbours. Petition of the peasantry of the parish of Tallagh, County Dublin, to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, objecting to the demands and exertions of the Reilly family of Glassamuckey for payment of tithe and counter demands from Ponsonby Shaw; request legal advice on the matter for fear of monetary loss; complaining the Reilly connexion are driving and distraining cattle for payment of tithe, while Shaw is engaged in distributing printed notices warning that no tithe dues should be paid to the Reilly family on account of an on-going lawsuit, signed by 15 persons. Letter from James Browne, [Roman Catholic Bishop of Kilmore], Cootehill, County Cavan, to Col Alexander Sanderson [Saunderson], MP for Cavan, indicating to the best of his knowledge that no meeting for a repeal of the union will take place in the county on the 17th of March; referring to his intercourse with the parish priest of Ballyhayse [Ballyhaise] whom insists no gathering of that nature is expected, except the annual one to remember Saint Patrick; observing that the better class of the people have no appetite for such agitation although the very poor might be induced to participate; referring also to the heavy handed activity of Sir Robert Adare Hudson, who he alleges is guilty of ‘turning out in one day sixty two poor wretched families’; adding in a postscript his intention to erect a school house in the locality. Memorial of John Bridgeman, farmer, and Mary Bridgeman, his wife, Ballinguile, Croom, County Limerick, to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, complaining of an attack on their dwelling by ‘a large party of Men armed with Swords, Guns, Blunderbusses and pistols’ and the mistreatment of Thomas Bridgeman, who was in the property at the time; protesting upon their return from the petty sessions of Ballingarry they found their house guarded by a man armed with a pitchfork, and William Casey of Gurteen inside carrying a gun; noting on subsequent visits to the house they found a band of armed men in waiting, who threatened them and refused entry; complaining that magistrates, George Massy and Richard Mason, have declined to issue warrants against those accused of the outrage and seeking redress.
