Letter from [Windham Henry Quin, 2nd Earl of] Dunraven, Adare, [County Limerick], to unidentified recipient, noting that a convict sentenced to transportation under the Insurrection Act has requested that his family be allowed join him. Recommending that permission be granted as this would prevent the return of the man who was the leader of the disaffected in the neighbourhood. Also recommending that John Christy be granted a licence to acquire two barrels of gunpowder for the purposes of blasting. Includes printed copy of the memorandum concerning the granting of free passage to families of convicts.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of Dr Michael Kiernan, Granard, County Longford, to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, complaining that William Fife, constable has a grudge against him and that he has been fined for allowing his dog roam through the town. Also a copy of the proceedings of an investigation into complaints by McKiernan against Fife, noting the evidence of Cornelius Plunkett, apprentice and mentioning constables Grier and Murtha. Also letter signed by six magistrates at Granard Petty Sessions, to Lieut R Simpson, Local Superintendent, Longford, defending the constabulary and noting that when Kiernan refused to pay the 10s fine a levy warrant was issued to confiscate and sell some goods belonging to him. Also covering letter from Simpson, to Col John Harvey, Inspector General and covering letter from Harvey, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, forwarding the reports and trusting that the matter has been resolved.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Maj George Warburton, Castlegar, [County Galway], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, enclosing copies of a report and correspondence [extant] relative to alleged misconduct on the part of Capt Firman, Chief Constable and the police stationed at Clifden and offering to conduct an investigation on the ground if required; observing that Michael Mullery, Under Sheriff of Galway, in his letter of complaint, appeared to believe that the police were bound to assist him in executing civil processes. Includes copies of letters from Mullery, Sheriff’s Office, Loughrea, [County Galway], to Warburton, complaining that he was barricaded into a house in Clifden by a mob and that the nearby constabulary did not come to his assistance. Includes memorandum probably by Gregory, instructing Warburton how to investigate the case.
