Letter from [Sir Richard A O’Donnel], chairman of quarter sessions, Castlebar, [County Mayo], to Edward Geoffrey Smith Stanley, Chief Secretary, conveying an application for an increase in the number of police constables to serve in the half barony of Erris, County Mayo. Encloses resolutions of the magistrates assembled for the general quarter sessions at Castlebar stating that due to an ‘alarming spread of insubordination’ an additional 20 police officers will be required to keep the peace, signed by 14 magistrates. Also proclamation [with annotations in different hand] giving authority to the magistrates of Castlebar to appoint an additional 20 police constables for the half barony of Erris, signed by Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary. |

Letter from Henry McNally, late sub-constable, Randalstown, County Antrim, to Baron [Tnyll], Dublin Castle, seeking reinstatement to the police constabulary from which he was dismissed; asking that an investigation be conducted and reference be made to his certificates of character. Includes certificate attesting to the good character of McNally and requesting his case be re-examined, signed by Patrick O’Neill, parish priest of Ahoghill and Bernard McCauley, parish priest of Ballymena, County Antrim; with annotation on base by McNally stating that James Dunbarr, constable of Ballyborrow, [Bailieborough], County Cavan, was reprieved despite permitting a prisoner to escape. Also certificate from the magistrates of County Cavan, declaring that McNally, late sub-constable, Kingscourt, County Cavan, has been acquitted and deemed innocent of the charge of assault made by John [Rebeven], signed by six magistrates.
