Letter from Richard Griffith, mining engineer, Cork, County Cork, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, expressing reservation over handling of funds granted for completion of canal by the local committee of Adare, County Limerick, and to assert that no further advance should be made ‘until a Lease for ever, of the ground, at a peppercorn rent, has been granted by Lord Adare and his Tenants to the Director General of Inland Navigation, or to any other Public Board’, and in addition, that half of the monetary costs should be met by Adare and the inhabitants of the district; encloses memorial from the inhabitants of Adare to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting additional government aid of £100 towards completion of canal and asserting possession of ‘a lease of 99 years from the occupying tenant’ and receipt of ‘Lord Adare’s grant of the ground by letter’: refers also to local dearth of employment and danger to local property due to a likely shortage of winter fuel.
