SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from Thomas Butler, Thurles, County Tipperary, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the financial struggles of Irish land owners, and money owed to creditors on 'debts which they contracted when money was of less value than it now bears, which debts they are under obligations to pay to their respective creditors in money which has acquired more than double the value it had when such obligations were entered into'. Notes that this has created absentee landlords and impoverished tenants, 'for they have nothing now to give, and they have abated their rents until they can abate no more'. Emphasises need for government intervention to assist the landed proprietors and avert a 'a revolution of property' in Ireland; details his 5 suggestions to alleviate the problem, including the establishment of a fund to provide loans to distressed land owners. |
