SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Reverend John A Jagoe, Skull glebe house, Skull, County Cork, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, responding, as requested, concerning sum of £100, the amount left over from money granted for assistance of poor in parish of Skull. Details the reasons why this money has not yet been expended, referring to a dispute between Jagoe, as treasurer of the parochial committee, and Richard Griffiths, engineer overseeing public works in the parish; complains of Griffith's conduct, 30 December 1822. Encloses petition from 'the distressed inhabitants of the North part of your Parish', to Reverend Jagoe, emphasising the extent of their distress and requesting employment in the construction of a new road in the area [1822]. Printed account detailing application of £3,000 granted to distribute flaxseed to poor

SCOPE & CONTENT:

2 copies of printed account of the application of £3,000 granted by Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, in May 1822, to be expended in the purchase and distribution of flaxseed in the distressed districts of Ireland; account produced by the Linen Board, 30 September 1822. Includes details respecting where and how the money was spent, with the names of the merchants who supplied the flaxseed. Also includes statement of observations by Peter Besnard, Linen Board inspector general for Munster, concerning the deployment of the money, noting that, 'this most seasonable Grant…has afforded the means of employment to several thousands of the neighbouring Poor'; and similar statement by James Greer, inspector general for Connaught, 30 September 1822.
