2 letters from John F Knox, Ballina, County Mayo, magistrate, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, 20; 21 December 1822, concerning a letter from Dublin Castle, which was incorrectly addressed and hence delayed, requesting Knox's response to a petition from James Gallagher, complaining of being imprisoned without subsistence, and complaining of Knox's conduct. Knox details the case, emphasising that Gallagher is 'a notoriously turbulent character', and detailing his previous conduct, including leading 'a party of rioters in an attempt to prevent the exportation of Oatmeal'. Returns Gallagher's original petition, addressed to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, 10 October 1822. Also damp press copy of original letter sent from the Chief Secretary's Office to Knox, incorrectly addressed to 'Henry John Knox', 21 October 1822 [text of letter very faint and largely unreadable]. |
