Letter from Samuel Dickson, Limerick, County Limerick, to [Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary], Dublin Castle, detailing problems and abuses in the legal system in Limerick city, in particular, the fees and bail bonds charged by magistrates. States that such fees encourage magistrates to hear 'petty prosecutions', thus transforming 'drunken animosities' into 'excessive Expense, riot and litigation', 19 December 1822. Encloses printed handbill of 'Presentments ordered on the County of the City of Limerick at Summer Assizes, Friday, July 26, 1822'. Lists name of each member of the grand jury, and each individual presentment, and its cost; includes several entries for fees to be paid to the clerk of the crown, clerk of the peace, sheriffs, crier, and jailer [these have been flagged with a pencil mark]. |
