Letter from Laurence Parsons, 2nd earl of Rosse, General Post Office, Dublin, joint Irish Post Master General, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, recommending case of William Parsons, 'one of the ablest and best informed officers in the Custom-house', 13 November 1822. Encloses letter from Parsons, Custom House, Dublin, surveyor and inspector on Custom House quay, to Goulburn, 13 November 1822, enclosing copy of Parsons' petition to the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury, requesting to be appointed to situation of local commissioner of customs in Ireland, 'an office which I have every reason to believe will be created upon the recommendation of the Parliamentary Commissioners of Irish Revenue inquiry'. Petition details Parsons' services, in particular his exposure of frauds committed against the Irish revenue, detailing the circumstances of each of his discoveries, including frauds against tobacco duty; the weighing of goods such as coffee; and the seizure of illicit rum. Parsons emphasises his work to introduce rules and procedures employed in the English customs system, into Ireland, 28 October 1822. |
