Letter from Edward Lawson, Grand Canal House, William Street, Dublin, secretary to the Grand Canal Company, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting an order from the Lord Lieutenant, to permit John Killaly, government engineer, and also engineer to the Grand Canal Company, to attend a trial at Philipstown [Daingean] assizes, King's County [County Offaly]. Emphasises that Killaly is an 'indispensable witness' for the Grand Canal Company in a case brought against them concerning land 'alleged to have been taken by the directors General….' from Captain Bennet, on the River Shannon, 26 July 1822; Lawson encloses copy of a letter from Killaly, Ennis, County Clare, to WD Rooke, 30 Molesworth Street, stating that he cannot leave County Clare to attend the trial, without a warrant from government, 23 July 1823. Includes letter John Killaly, Ennis, County Clare, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, recommending use of expertise offered by Messrs Henry, Mullins and MacMahon, Dublin, engineers, in construction of road from Ennis to Kilrush, County Clare, 18 July 1822; encloses copy of letter from Killaly, to Henry, Mullins and MacMahon, making proposal for public works scheme for ‘giving immediate and extended employment’ to the labouring classes, a body who ‘have advanced less in the knowledge, and use of the ordinary implements of labour’ than their contemporaries in other parts of the United Kingdom, 9 July 1822; also encloses letter of reply from Henry, Mullins and MacMahon, Royal Docks office, to Killaly, applauding the initiative and stating that ‘we shall accept the proposition you have made; provided that the personal Superintendence of one member only of our Firm be required, during the progress of the Works’, 16 July 1823.
