Letter from Alexander Nimmo, civil engineer, Clifton, Connemara, County Galway, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, reporting on state of poverty amongst the poor in County Galway and proposing a number of public works schemes for their support: conveys that distress on Garomna Island and in the parish of Ballynakill ‘far exceeds any thing I have yet witnessed’ with a total of twenty two people having lost their lives in the latter; recommends ‘continuation of the Clifton Road to the new pier at Cleggan’, an extension of road from Galway to Costello bay, and a new road stretching in direction of Killary harbour.

Letter from the Bishop of Elphin [John Leslie], Central Committee Room, Strokestown, County Roscommon, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, requesting grant of portion of parliamentary fund for purposes of laying a new mail coach road from Longford to Ballina, County Mayo: contends ‘that such a measure will afford effectual means in employing & relieving a considerable portion of our distressed population’.

Letter from Alexander Nimmo, civil engineer, Galway, County Galway, to Alexander Mangin, clerk, Civil Department, Dublin Castle, conveying that he has undertaken work on three small piers under authority from the Fishery Board and mentions presentments for road from Kilkerran bay to Killary in Connemara region, County Galway: also refers to use of presentments for purchase of meal and difficulties of making regular wage payments, due to the dispersal of public works projects; also includes copy letter from William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, to Nimmo, communicating that he ‘should instantly employ the people in every possible way without any reserve as to the application of any particular funds it being no longer a legal question, as all funds are to be applied generally to the great object of the immediate employment and support of the distressed peasantry’; also includes extract from the quere book for County Galway, Barony of Ballynahinch, indicating presentments for roads in county.

Letter from Captain Terence O’Neil, Deer Park Lodge, Derrymacloughney, Oranmore, County Galway, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, enclosing copy letter from Alexander Nimmo, civil engineer, Galway, County Galway, indicating that a monetary advance can be made ‘on the credit of presentments made at last assizes for the repair of roads’ but those not so presented will require special authority from the Lord Lieutenant; also includes letter from Lord French, Moyne, Dangan, County Galway, to Nimmo, requesting information on whether funds will be advanced to overseers of presentments and if control of project will be forfeited in such case: includes reply from Nimmo, outlining his role in management of public works and to stress beyond that ‘he does not mean further to interfere with the superintendence of the overseers’.

Letter from Alexander Nimmo, civil engineer, Galway, County Galway, to Alexander Mangin, clerk, Civil Department, Dublin Castle, reporting that a scheme of public works on the road from Galway to Oughterard and Connemara, is presently under construction, with additional funding for its completion to come from ‘the Charitable funds in the parish of Moycullen’: indicates uncertainty over whether he can make funds available under the act for completion of a road to the ferry at Knock, County Mayo.
