Letter from Alexander Nimmo, civil engineer, Clifton, Connemara, County Galway, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, reporting on state of poverty amongst the poor in County Galway and proposing a number of public works schemes for their support: conveys that distress on Garomna Island and in the parish of Ballynakill ‘far exceeds any thing I have yet witnessed’ with a total of twenty two people having lost their lives in the latter; recommends ‘continuation of the Clifton Road to the new pier at Cleggan’, an extension of road from Galway to Costello bay, and a new road stretching in direction of Killary harbour. |
