Letter from George Harrison, Treasury Chambers, London, assistant secretary to the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, 26 July 1822, enclosing copy of an order in council, dated 5 July 1822, authorizing a new copper coinage to be struck for circulation in Ireland, and containing details of the proposed design for the coins; order originally signed by James Buller, clerk of the Privy Council. Harrison requests that the Lord Lieutenant take steps to give the coins legal currency. Also letter from Stephen Rumbold Lushington, Treasury Chambers, London, joint secretary to the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning arrangements for the shipment of the new coin to Ireland, and for its arrival at the Bank of Ireland, 31 August 1822. Also memorandum by Chief Secretary's Office official, concerning the procedures involved in introducing the coin into circulation, but noting that the order in council does not specify the value of the new coin [August 1822]. |

Letter from Stephen Rumbold Lushington, Treasury Chambers, London, joint secretary to the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing copy of report from Courtenay Boyle, Nicholas Brown and William Burnett, commissioners of victualling, victualling office, London, in response to a petition from the merchants, traders and manufacturers of Cork, [to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle], requesting that supplies of provisions, bedding, and other articles required for convict ships sailing from Cork to New South Wales, Australia, revert to being purchased in Cork, instead of in Deptford, London. Report refers to procedures for supplying convict ships, and the advantages of loading ships in London, 8 August 1822. Also petition of merchants, traders and manufacturers of Cork, to Wellesley, requesting that the supplies revert to being purchased in Cork. Emphasises the benefits to government, and the need to boost Cork's economy; signed by 25 individuals, each stating their trade or business, Cork, 18 October 1822 [probably renewing the request of their earlier petition]. |
