Petition of gentlemen and tenantry of Gorumna, County Galway, on estate of Arthur French St George, to Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle, requesting advance of financial assistance out of fund for public works for making a road between the bridge of Dangan to the pass of Dangan, County Galway: refers to local distress and the ‘great failure of the Potato & oat crops & the very great loss of Black Cattle (not having the means of feeding them through the Winter)’; asserts also that the proposed roadway would benefit transportation to the fishery concerns on coast, as ‘many thousand of Herrings and large quantities of other fish have been thrown overboard’ due to want of salt and that by opening access to the country it would ‘effectively put an end to the baneful effects of illicit distillation’.

Letter from Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Sorell, military secretary, Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, Dublin, to Alexander Mangin, clerk, Civil Department, Dublin Castle, indicating that the assistant quarter master general at Cork has been directed to assist Richard Griffith, mining engineer, in acquisition of necessary information pertaining to making improvement to the Wellington Road, from Cork to the new barracks on the Glanmire Road; includes letter from Sorell to Edward Connor, acknowledging communication and transmitting view of Major Reade, assistant quarter master general, respecting expediency of road improvement scheme; includes letter from assistant quarter master general, Cork, to quarter master general, Dublin, making commendation for project and to note the work ‘might be affected at a very trifling expense by the numerous unemployed Poor of this place’.

Letter from Joseph Huband, Charlemont Mall, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, recommending as scheme of public works for employment of poor the ‘construction of a canal, of about a mile in length with a Lock, in the county of Clare, near O’Brien’s Bridge; for the purpose of removing two inconvenient and dangerous Rapids in the River Shannon…preparatory or previous to, the construction of a steam-boat or boats, to ply on Lough Derg for towing trade-boats’: encloses letter from John Stokes, engineer, Grand Canal Company, Limerick, County Limerick, to Huband reflecting on desirability of works at O’Brien’s Bridge, for he states ‘it would relieve a thousand famishing wretches of that Country & would save the lives & Properties of industrious people employed in the Carriage of goods to this Town’; includes memorial from supervisors of proposed road from Kenmare to Killarney, County Kerry, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting advance of funds for commencement of work on road for alleviation of local poor, signed by Richard Mahony and three others; also includes memorandum making reference to ruling of King’s Bench against Huband, who opposed construction of the road from Kenmare to Killarney.
