Letter from Reverend Richard Woodward, Glanworth Glebe, Fermoy, County Cork, to Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle, reflecting on relief of local poor and to observe ‘In the past weeks I have not only attended our Co[unty] meeting, but the local Parochial Committee of every Parish around me, & we have marked out local works, in different districts of each parish, so that Paddy will not feel any “charge”, only he will work for less hire & be paid in Food for his family instead of his 10d for his own Whiskey’; includes letter from Woodward to Dr William Disney, seeking assistance and offering suggestions on containment of fever amongst the lower orders, the spread of which arises primarily from the practice of ‘Wakes, & the wandering of infected Beggars’ both of which ‘originate in superstition’. |
