Letter from Sir John Burke, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, conveying that a sum of £30 has been distributed in aid to his poor tenants in parish of Templetoher, County Roscommon: encloses letter from Charles Kelly to Sir John Burke, Kildare Street Club, Dublin, reporting that fifty of about two hundred families who are presently tenants on his estate in Templetoher are ‘without any means of support, and in a State of Starvation, some of them begging about the Country’ and complaining of ineffective use of £50 obtained from Government by ‘Bagot’ for use in the parish: with attached resolutions of meeting of inhabitants of parishes of Kilerone and Ballinakill complaining of Bagot’s maladministration of financial aid, and declaring intention of making separate applications and managing funds by committee, signed by Kelly and Joseph Burke; also encloses letter from Owen McDermott, Coffey's Hotel, Dominick Street, Dublin, to Sir John Burke, reporting of the wretched state of the peasantry of Templetoher, who are ‘entirely subsisting on water grass, nettles and rape leaves where they are suffered to pull them’; also encloses letter from Thomas Taylor, clerk, Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle, to Gregory, conveying that the board [commissioners for poor relief] have determined that Bagot disburse remaining funds for use of poor of Ballinakill and that a grant of £50 be entrusted to care of Joseph Burke for use in parish of Kilerone: also refers to grants of £1,500 for Mayo and £500 for Galway, to be issued to the Archbishop of Tuam [Power le Poer Trench]. |
