Letter from Reverend Robert Merritt, Creagh Glebe, Skibbereen, County Cork, to Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle, providing defense of his handling of a cargo of potatoes which was the subject of a dispute with another local relief committee; encloses letter from Thomas Rowcroft, London Committee, England, to local relief committee of Castlehaven, enclosing a bill of landing [not extant] for the cargo of potatoes, sent ‘for the Relief of the district of Skibbereen’; also encloses letter from Richard Boyle Townsend, Castle Townsend, Cork, to Major General Sir John Lambert, complaining that Merritt had summoned the military to take possession of the ship containing the potatoes; also encloses copy letter from Rowcroft to Townsend expressing ‘much surprise’ at the nature of proceedings; also encloses copy report of local committee of Castlehaven parish to the London Committee, protesting against the conduct of Merritt; also includes ‘Account of Money expended by the Rev[eren]d Robert Merritt in making and repairing roads’, for period May to August 1822.

Letter from the inhabitants of the constablewick of Arklow, County Wicklow, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, appealing for recall of cess warrants on grounds of distress in local fisheries and enclosing case of the inhabitants against present imposition of cess with legal opinion on same from RN Bennett; includes directions of Baron D George and St George Daly requesting the grand jury publish a baronial table showing cess exactions and permit individuals to appear before them for redress of claims.

Copy letter from EFW Steinkopff, Commissioner for Relief of Poor, Dublin Castle, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, enclosing copy letter from the Irish Fishery Office to Thomas P Luscombe, concerning ‘outrageous conduct’ displayed in opposition to collaborative scheme to supply food to the distressed poor of County Mayo; also encloses copy letter from Lieutenant William Hutchinson, of His Majesty’s brig Plumper, Westport, reporting on the actions of the people of Buffin and Blacksod bay in stealing from fishing vessels whose cargo was destined for poor relief: observes ‘The People on this part of the Coast are little better than savages, & if possible worse than the Galway people’.
