Letter from Donal O'Brien, Dublin, [treasurer to the trustees of the County Clare turnpike road], to Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, 10 July 1822, enclosing petition of the trustees, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, emphasising the distress across the area around the turnpike road, and requesting a loan of £200 from government, in order to give some employment to the poor of area, using the tolls of the turnpike gates as security; petition signed by O'Brien, at Cratloe, Limerick, 10 July 1822. With subsequent annotations on reverse of petition, by John Sealy Townsend, KC and legal advisor to the Chief Secretary's Office, concerning the application, 13 July 1822.

Letter from W George, 3 Mountjoy Street, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, proposing scheme to turn unclaimed bog or mountain over to lower class tenants: asserts that ‘the proprietor of reclaimable Bog or Mountain should have it marked out in lots of from 10 to 20 acres, and on each lot, such proprietor to build a Cabin of stone and lime, covered with slates’; observes also that ‘Cabins built with mud or sods, and covered with a little straw or Heath, soon become untenable, engendering disease, and obliging the poor inmates to fly to the more favourable parts of the Country, to beg, or steal’.
