SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Maj William Reid, Captain of the Royal Engineers [and superintendent for Lt Col Thomas Frederick Colby, Director of Ordnance Survey in Ireland], Survey Office, Phoenix Park, [Dublin], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, informing him that county maps of Armagh had been withdrawn from Grand Jury room by William Armstrong, the surveyor who made them, and warning that this will be of great inconvenience to Richard Griffith, [civil engineer], whose men are working to survey boundaries in the area. Subsequent letter from Griffith, Cork, to Gregory, requesting that official letters be sent directing the return of the maps, and stating that his officers did not wish to copy them, but merely trace the boundaries, exclusive of roads, towns and other markings. Also includes letters from William Olpherts, High Sheriff, and Armstrong, Crumlin, [Dublin], to Gregory and others claiming that the maps were only removed for their own protection.
