SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Petition of William H Bourne, 46 Dawson Street, Dublin, on behalf of himself and his brother, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, complaining of their treatment at the hands of the Irish Post Office, concerning an ongoing dispute centred on the Bournes’ right to hold the contract to operate the Dublin-Limerick mail coach. In particular, the circumstances of a new contract agreed between the Bournes and Earl Rosse, one of the Irish Post Masters General, to operate the Dublin-Limerick mail coach, in April 1821, which agreement was never fulfilled, following a decision taken by the Post Office, for the need to properly advertise the contact. Also detailing the agreements for an increased speed for the mail coach. Requests government’s interference, so that the agreement of April 1821 may be carried into effect, 7 December 1822. Also booklet containing copies of letter from Sir Edward Smith Lees, secretary to Irish Post Masters General, to Sir Robert Peel, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, 7 November 1814, and letter from Lees to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle 22 November 1821, concerning William Bourne’s petition, respecting tolls on mail coaches. Includes discussion of Dublin-Limerick mail coach, in particular, concerning tolls on mail coach roads; the monopoly of contractors; and the relevant legislation respecting stage coaches, in particular concerning restrictions on numbers of passengers permitted to be carried. |
