Letter from Willam J Baldwin, defending conduct of County Cork magistrates |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from William J Baldwin, 21 Craven Street, Strand, London, England, magistrate for County Cork, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, 4 January 1823, enclosing a statement [which he wrote previously but had not yet sent], to Wellesley, detailing and defending his conduct as a magistrate, and also that of his friend, Philip Harding, also a magistrate for County Cork. States that although he has since learnt that he is to continue as a magistrate, Harding has indeed been superseded, therefore he has sent the statement on his behalf. Statement offers a lengthy defence of Baldwin and Harding's conduct as magistrates. Refers to hostility of other local magistrates, particularly, Hodges Eyre of Macroom, towards Harding, because Harding is a Roman Catholic. Also offers his opinions on the characters and conduct of several of the other magistrates in the county, in particular, highlighting Eyre's Orange and 'party' sentiments [4 January 1823]. Also letter from Baldwin, 34 Upper Norton Street, Portland Place, London, to Edward I Johnston, private secretary to Wellesley, concerning a reply received from Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning Harding and his commission of the peace, 4 February 1823. |
