Letter from Robert La Touche, Harristown, Killcullen, County Kildare, magistrate of County Kildare, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the case of James Carney, a lunatic confined in Naas jail, County Kildare for 9 years, and seeking an order from government, for his removal to the House of Industry, Dublin; emphasises problem of overcrowding in the jail, 17 December 1823. With subsequent annotations by Goulburn and by a CSO clerk. Also letter from Richard Grace, Richmond Lunatic Asylum, Dublin, moral governor of the asylum, to Alexander Mangin, first clerk in civil department of Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, responding, as requested, in respect of Carney's case. Notes that the asylum's wards are already crowded and that many other applicants are awaiting admission, but encloses a printed admission form, to be completed, in order to admit Carney at a future date [form not present], 1 January 1824. |

Petition of Thomas Cosgrave, Brookeborough, County Fermanagh, formerly sergeant schoolmaster of Royal Tyrone militia regiment, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, offering his services to the military and requesting admission into any regiment. Refers to his service in the Royal Tyrone militia, until his discharge in 1815. Petition dated 29 November 1823. Encloses certificate from Lieutenant Colonel William Stewart, commander of the Royal Tyrone militia, dated Londonderry, 3 September 1815, referring to Cosgrave's good conduct, and confirming his discharge from the regiment, '….by the Orders of Government, having served five years'. Petition of Mary Kilduff, of parish of Moore, County Roscommon, writing from Ballinalsoe, County Galway, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting passage to New South Wales, Australia, to join her husband, John Kilduff, a convict transported in 1819. Refers to a letter received from her husband, stating that the governor of New South Wales has sanctioned her to proceed there free of passage, as a result of her husband's 'Meritorious conduct', 23 November 1823. Petition certified by Reverend James Anderson, Church of Ireland curate of the union of Moore and Drum, 7 December 1823. Kilduff encloses a separate certificate from Walter McEvily [McEvilly], parish priest of Moore, certifying that she and John Kilduff were married in the Catholic church. |

Details their rescue of 2 men, whose boat capsized as they were pulling the 'Elizabeth' of Sligo, and also the assistance with the recovery of the body of a 3rd man who also fell in to the water, 26 December 1823. SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Petition of Issabella [sic] Gray; Sarah Gray; and Edward James Gray, Raphoe, County Donegal, children of the late James Gray of Dungannon, County Tyrone, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, emphasising their destitution since their father's death, and referring to their former application to government, seeking a continuation of their father's salary held by him for life for his services and losses during the 1798 rebellion. States that the small arrear of a quarter's salary that was paid to them following his death, 'was barely sufficient' to cover the costs of his funeral. Renews their request for government assistance, seeking government employment for Edward Gray, to enable him to support his sisters as well as his own wife and family, December 1823. Petition certified by several local magistrates and gentlemen of the barony of Raphoe, including William Webb, chief magistrate of police. Also note annexed to petition from [Reverend] James Jones, magistrate, certifying to James Gray's services during the rebellion, and to the 'great distress' of his daughters. With subsequent annotation by Goulburn. |

Letter from William Ormsby, Marshall Hall, Four Courts Marshalsea, Dublin, marshal of the Four Courts Marshalsea, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, renewing his claim for remuneration and a permanent salary from government, having lost much of his former income from prisoners' fees, under new legislation for insolvent debtors. Also emphasises the 'arduous' nature of his duties and responsibilities, 22 December 1823; with subsequent annotation by Goulburn. Also further letter from Ormsby, to Goulburn, reiterating his claims to obtain a salary of £500 a year in lieu of the loss of fees, 19 January 1824. |
