Emphasises urgency of need for food relief, referring to reports that, 'our poor fellow Creatures in Connemara are at this present time feeding upon weeds, having had no potatoes last year for the want of seed in the previous Spring'. |

SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Petition of Richard Kearney of Park House, Banagher, King's County [County Offaly], to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, detailing his complaints against Mr Fry, a middleman and Kearney's landlord, for the unlawful seizure of property belonging to Kearney. Also complains of Fry's conduct on behalf of 'an oppressed and impoversished Tenantry, who paid him a year's rent which he never paid himself to the Head Landlord, and for which fraudulent neglect they are now likely to be turned out of their little farms and Houses'. Kearney emphasises that it was such conduct by non resident middlemen, and agents of absentee landlords, that 'forced the Peasantry of the South of Ireland into Insurrection and Rebellion'; also complains of conduct of the police and magistracy. Lists the names of those local policemen and magistrates of King's County, who demonstrated improper conduct and partiality, accusing the police of trampling on the laws of the country. Urges government interference to curb such proceedings. |
