Letter from Edward I Johnston, Phoenix Park, Dublin, private secretary to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, 22 February 1823, forwarding, for Gregory's attention, a petition of the election committee of Lieutenant Colonel White, to Wellesley, complaining of conduct of Captain Henry Ellis, commander of the water guard at Balbriggan, County Dublin, in dismissing men from the water guard who voted for Captain White rather than Sir Compton Domville; petition signed by John Hore, secretary of the committee; encloses affidavit of John Oram of Skerries, County Dublin, sworn before Frederick Homan, magistrate, 19 February 1823, stating that he was dismissed from his employment as a water guard, following his father's vote for Colonel White in the recent contested election [annotation indicates petition received 21 February 1823]. Letter from Michael O'Grady, Listowel, County Kerry, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, 20 February 1823, appending a copy of a statement by O'Grady, which he sent to George Raymond, 'agent to an absentee Landlord', presenting an abstract of rents, tithes, taxes, and other expenses, incurred in 1822 on lands of Glourie [Glouria], County Kerry, rented by O'Grady from Mr Gun of Cheltenham, England, and demonstrating, 'the return I had from the produce of said Lands in said year to meet s[ai]d demands'. O'Grady emphasises the difficulties of the economic times for Irish tenants and urges need for agents of absentee landlords to exercise 'Moderation & sympathy', and to grant 'immediate abatements' of rent, 13 February 1823. |
