File of papers relating to recommendations of Major Benjamin Blake Woodward, joint inspector general of Irish prisons, for the abolition of certain bridewells in the southern prison district of Ireland. Includes letter from Woodward, 41 Leeson Street, Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning his visits to each bridewell in the southern district, and submitting a list of bridewells which he recommends to be discontinued; list includes 29 prisons in counties Kilkenny, Waterford, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Clare, Tipperary and Galway, and King's County [County Offaly]. Woodward notes, 'I refer to my annual report for the disgraceful & unprovided State of the present too numerous places of confinement in this district', 19 February 1823. File also includes memorandum detailing the reasons for the closure of each of the bridewells at Caher, Borrisokane, Templemore, and New Birmingham, County Tipperary, 21 March 1823.
