Petition of distressed inhabitants of parish of Cloney [Clooney], barony of Bunratty, County Clare, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, emphasising their distress and urging relief through employment; request the construction of new lines of road in the area, from O'Brien's Castle to Clooney, and from Rylane to Spancilhill. Petition signed by Thady Griffith, on behalf of self and parishioners; petition certified and supported by 13 individuals including local clergy, 7 September 1822. Enclosed with the petition is 'A List of distressed families in the parish of Cloney who will be in want of provisions, with the number in each family…'. List includes the names of 108 heads of families, with the size of each family. This list is also signed by Griffith, and certified by the same 13 individuals, 7 September 1822. Also letter from John Killaly, Ennis, County Clare, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting on his inspections of the baronies of Bunratty and Tulla, with a view to potential public works scheme to create a new line of road between County Clare and the markets held at Ballinasloe, County Galway. Details his plans, including estimated expense, and encloses a sketch map of the road network he proposes [sketch not present]. Refers to the feasibility of the line of road between O'Brien's Castle and Clooney. Also refers to the desirability of employment for the local peasantry, 28 October 1822. Letter from Michael George Prendergast, [Galway, County Galway], MP for Galway town, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, [20 November 1822] enclosing petition of the merchants and other inhabitants of Galway town, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, referring to their former petition highlighting the, 'lamentable decline' in the town's trade as a result of the 'dilapidated state' of the docks, and renewing their request for funds to improve the quay; petition signed by 59 individuals, 20 November 1822, and certified by John Lushington Reilly, revenue collector at Galway, stating that the revenue generated at Galway port would be much increased, by 'any improvement which may be made on the existing most miserable Quay', 20 November 1822. Also copy of Prendergast's letter. |
