File of papers relating to request by Chief Constable Lt John Read Bindon, of Doonass, Clonlara, [County Clare, post town is Castleconnell, County Limerick], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, for money to offer a reward for information relation to the robbery of quaker [William] Bennis, at Ballicorney Mills [Killaloe], on 16 November 1828 [see CSO/RP/1829/373]. Includes draft copy of reply from the Chief Secretary's Office to Bindon, requesting how much money he requires and an explanation of how it will be used. Additional letter from Bindon to Gregory, requesting approximately £30, and forwarding 2 letters he received, from: an anonymous informant naming the parties involved, stating that if he was to do so openly, he would certainly lose his life; and letter apparently from the perpetrators themselves, warning Bindon that he should consider himself ‘in the Cornours [Coroner’s] Books and do not think that the few Blood hounds that you have Will Save you from our hands’. Annotation on reverse by Gregory, referring matter to Maj [George] Warburton, Inspector General of Police [in Connaught]. |
