Also statement of list of proposed posts to be filled, as prepared by Dr Edward Trevor, superintendent and medical inspector of Irish convicts; this includes an annotation by Major Benjamin Benjamin Blake Woodward, joint inspector general of Irish prisons, confirming his approval of Trevor's plan, and noting that 'the list of officers transmitted from England is much too expensive and that the number of officers & salaries proposed by Dr Trevor would be quite sufficient', 19 February 1823. |

Letter from James Beatty, governor of Sligo town and county prison, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary for Ireland, at Hill Street, London, [postmarked 25 March 1823], enclosing a copy of Beatty's letter of reply to Richard Hely-Hutchinson, 1st earl of Donoughmore, Bulstrode Street, London, in reply to Donoughmore's circular letter published in a Dublin newspaper, calling on all clerks of the crown and peace, and keepers of prisons, to detail their salaries, in light of new legislation to regulate their salaries and fees. Beatty details each of his sources of income, including his salary as prison governor, and fees from crown prisoners and from debtors, as well as those of the head turnkey and under turnkey of Sligo prison. Also makes his suggestions concerning the terms of the new legislation, originally dated 22 March 1823. |
