Complains that Ireland's clerks of the crown are not being allowed an opportunity to petition parliament on the subject of the legislation, as they are on assize circuit duty. Requests government relief. Petition certified by Paulus Singer, former deputy commissariat general, and Henry McFarland, captain commanding the commissariat corps of waggoners, commissariat barracks, Baggot Street, Dublin, 18 November 1822. Annotation on reverse of petition indicates that it was received at Dublin Castle, 20 March 1823. O'Brien encloses a letter from Thomas Popham Luscombe, deputy commissary general, to O'Brien, in response to O'Brien's request for relief and directing him to the Lord Lieutenant, 2[?8] September 1822. |

Letter from John Pollock, secretary of the Patent Oil Gas Company for Ireland, company's office, 23 Bachelor's Walk, Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the company's proposal to light the interior and exterior of Dublin Castle, with gas extracted from oil, and referring to the benefits of this type of lighting. Encloses several documents in testimony of its benefits, including a copy extract of letter from Sir Edward Smith Lees, secretary to the Irish Post Masters General, concerning the successful use of the oil gas light in the General Post Office, producing, 'A Light extremely brilliant', and '…exempt from unpleasant odour…', originally dated 13 July 1822; also encloses 2 copies of printed circular report of the committee of the Lying-in Hospital, Dublin, appointed to visit the gas works and report on 'the gas lights produced by the Oil and Coal Companies respectively'; refers to the benefits of the Oil Gas and recommends its use in and around the hospital, 9 August 1822; also encloses 2 copies of printed advertisement for the Patent Oil Gas Company, offering to supply lighting, and detailing their system of charging for gas used, 'for which purpose they will supply every Consumer of Gas with a Gas Meter, through which all the Gas that is consumed passes, and is registered with the greatest accuracy', signed by Pollock, 1 March 1823. |
