Letter from James Corry, Linen Board, Dublin, secretary to the Trustees for Linen and Hempen Manufactures, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, 15 March 1823, enclosing a copy of correspondence between Corry and John S Ferguson, chairman of a committee of the linen trade in Lisburn, County Antrim, concerning the linen traders' wish to see a copy of the intended new linen legislation; correspondence includes copy of resolutions passed at a meeting of the linen trade committee for Belfast and Lisburn district held on 28 February 1823, chaired by Ferguson, concerning the problem of imitation linen, manufactured from 'Cotton Warp and Linen Weft', and sold and exported as linen, and making recommendations for clearly distinguishing such materials from pure linen. Also draft copy of letter of reply from Goulburn to Corry, 31 March 1823.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of John Morgan, Killenaule, County Tipperary, formerly of County Limerick, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, detailing his role in providing information resulting in the prosecution of individuals involved in the murder of Mr Hoskins [son of Alexander Hoskins, land agent to Lord Courtenay, Newcastle, County Limerick]. Requests government employment in return for his services, 25 February 1823. Also letter from Mathew Barrington, Cork, County Cork, crown solicitor for Munster circuit, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting, as requested, on the veracity of Morgan's claims. Barrington reports that the chief service to government was provided by Morgan's father, Edward Morgan, who was subsequently given police employment, 24 March 1823. Also copy of letter of reply from Gregory to Morgan, 27 March 1823.

Petition of Robert Wall, Cloon, County Donegal, near Ruskey, County Londonderry, to Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, reporting an attack on him, 'led by instigation of the post master', in consequence of complaints made by Wall alleging frauds committed by the post master of Mohill, County Leitrim. Requests government protection, 2 March 1823. Also letter from Thomas Orde Lees, General Post Office, Dublin, acting secretary to Irish Post Masters General, to Goulburn, responding, as requested, concerning the case of Wall, 2 April 1823, and enclosing copy of the report of Thomas Thompson, solicitor for the Irish Post Office, reporting the post master's acquittal on all charges of drawing the pensions of deceased military pensioners, and expressing doubt on the credibility of Wall's character, 2 April 1823.
