Letter from William Stewart, near Clonakilty, County Cork, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, 7 January 1823, enclosing a statement of his observations concerning tithes and relating his experiences in the recovery of his own tithes. Notes that whilst the amounts to be paid by farmers in his neighbourhood are small, a farmer, '... seldom pays till sued for it & the expense he incurs is truly lamentable'. Urges that an easier and less expensive means be found for recovering small sums of unpaid tithes, 7 January 1823. Also letter from Stewart to Goulburn, requesting the return of his statement, 29 January 1823. |

Letter from Robert Ward, Bangor, County Down, colonel of the Royal South Down regiment of militia and a governor of County Down, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the mail and communications between Ireland and the United Kingdom, and referring to potential savings for the Post Office. In particular, relating to the harbours of Donaghadee, County Down, and Portpatrick, Scotland, which, '…may now be considered as merely ornamental, and these ornaments expensive without doing good'. Also refers to militia business, 6 January 1823. Encloses memorandum containing recommendations for savings in the Irish Post Office. In particular highlights the disadvantages of both Portpatrick and Donaghadee harbours, warning of the 'Uselessness of Expenditure, in making Harbours by Art, where Natural ones abound'. |
