4 letters from anonymous writer, styled 'Z', at 29 Fishamble Street, Dublin, to Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, offering his opinions on the state of the country and warning of Ireland's volatile disposition: 'The Radicals of England and Scotland are now confident that the Irish are well inclined to cooperate with them...'. Also states that, 'the Catholics expects [sic] to be emancipated, and to have every thing as they wish; that this is their time, and their right, there are others that thinks otherwise, particularly the Orangemen [sic]….'. Also warns of the strength of the Ribbonmen organisation and discusses its origins in the United Irish movement; refers to the tenor of successive Lord Lieutenancies in Ireland since the time of Earl Camden; discusses abuses in various institutions, such as the Linen Board; refers to his own inventions, such as seam-free canvas for painting, 20 March. Alludes to his own past, including his arrest in Armagh, and period of confinement [1790s] and refers to the punishments 'inflicted' upon him after 1798, 'for my acquaintance with R Emmit [sic] in 1803' [Robert Emmet]. Requests government financial assistance to establish a business. |

Letter from Lawrence Parsons, 2nd earl of Rosse, Parsonstown [Birr], King's County [County Offaly], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the case of the daughters of the late George Clibborn, a magistrate for King's County and County Westmeath. Refers to the 'extraordinary calamity of their case', stating that a bog overflowed, thus destroying a valuable piece of land which had been their sole provision, 25 March 1823. Encloses the petition of Anne, Abby, Mary, Jane, and Ruth Clibborn, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle [Talbot was succeeded as Lord Lieutenant by 1st marquis Wellesley in December 1821; the petition is undated therefore it is unclear if the petition dates from then or was wrongly addressed], requesting compensation for their losses. Rosse also encloses copy of a letter from Sir Evan Nepean [Chief Secretary for Ireland from 1804-1805] to Parsons, in order to demonstrate 'the estimation in which Mr Clibborn was held', originally dated 29 August 1804. |
