Letter from Rodolphus Greene, Dungarvan, County Waterford, sub sheriff of County Waterford, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning arrangements for the execution of William Fitzgerald on 31 March 1823, and the disposal of his body. Contains pencil annotation by Henry Joy, Solicitor General for Ireland, stating his opinion on the matter: 'I think the Crown has the right of disposing of the bodies of malefactors who have been executed. In times of disturbance it has been most frequently deemed prudent not to give up the Body to the friends of the criminal as they are in the habit of having a wake at which many are sworn in & many plans formed for committing outrages & for destroying the witnesses on whose testimony the Criminal was convicted…'; recommends burial of the body within the county jail. Joy's suggestion has been marked as approved by Richard Wellesley, 1st marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle. |
