Letter from Reverend Dr Charles Le Poer Trench, Church of Ireland archdeacon of Ardagh, Mackney, County Galway, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, offering observations on abuses of office by sub sheriffs of County Galway and in particular commenting upon the case of John Carson, sub sheriff of County Roscommon, who is accused of taking fees for delaying legal executions. He suggests the appointment of a parliamentary commission to investigate abuses which he claims are widespread. Also letter from John Wills, magistrate, Roscommon, County Roscommon, to William Kemmis, crown solicitor, Kildare Street, Dublin, enclosing deposition of John Sankey Kelly, St Helena Lodge, County Roscommon, alleging Carson accepted funds in order to secure himself against any losses that he might sustain in a transaction. Letter from Mathew Barrington, [crown solicitor, Munster circuit], 13 Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting on an application for relief by Michael McNamara of Limerick, County Limerick. States he finds McNamara ‘was not examined as a witness against [Thomas] FitzGibbon who was Convicted of Man Slaughter, nor am I aware of any private information he gave in this or in any other case’. Returns memorial from McNamara to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, claiming he assisted in the conviction of Fitzgibbon for the manslaughter of John Morissy [Morrissey], the conviction of Michael Sullivan, highwayman, and ‘also gave private Information of upwards of Twenty Persons who had arms and Ammunition in the Country’. He also makes reference to apprehension of Patrick O’Shea in Limerick and remarks on ‘a Rockite notice’ served on his father-in-law. Also memorial from McNamara to Wellesley, requesting financial support in recompense for services to government which include the conviction of Thomas Hanley, as well as the pursuit of other social miscreants. Also additional memorial from McNamara, Old Gaol, Limerick, to Wellesley, referring to his supply of information to magistrates Thomas P Vokes and Henry Lyons, and complaining of the small reward offered to enable his departure from Ireland for reasons of personal safety; refers to an incident in the country in which he was ‘attacked and followed by upwards of 100 people’ and seeks measure of financial relief due to his impoverished state. |

Letter from Henry Hobhouse, Under Secretary of State for the Home Department, Whitehall, London, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, enclosing letter from Ursula Liddle, Seaview, Clontarf, County Dublin, to Robert Peel, seeking advance of financial relief due to the burden of keeping her husband, Thomas Henry Liddle, late officer, 72nd Highland Regiment, who ‘has been deprived of the use of his Limbs’. Also memorial from Liddle to His Majesty, King George IV, seeking aid on behalf of herself and husband who retired from the military on account of poor health and was ‘deprived of both half Pay and Property’. She recalls receiving charitable assistance from Lord Charles Whitworth and the Duchess of Dorset, and more latterly, from Lord Powerscourt, Lady Anne Gregory, Colonel Sir Robert French, Major Vernon and Miss Smythe. Also encloses letter from [Robert] Cramble to Liddle, acknowledging memorial and indicating that Lord Powerscourt might be amenable to making a representation to Dublin Castle; also encloses letter with transcriptions of various letters on issues at stake, one of which is dated October 1809. |
