TITLE:

Memorial from James McKenna, teacher, Dublin, requesting assistance to leave Ireland following his evidence against the Ribbonmen

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Henry Hobhouse, Under Secretary of State for the Home Department, London, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing memorial from James McKenna, teacher, 13 Fleet Street, Dublin, to Robert Peel, Secretary of State, London, requesting advance of financial aid to facilitate his departure from Ireland on account of a threat to his life following revelations to government on the activities of the Ribbonmen. Refers to coming into contact with John McDonnell, a classical teaching assistant to Reverend George Irwine, while employed in County Longford, and of discovering a conspiracy hatched by the Ribbon societies of Leinster and Ulster to be carried forward at a meeting in County Armagh; explains that his efforts to have the activists ‘brought to justice’ were undermined by the trial of ‘a disaffected man’ who was employed by Reverend Charles Henry Minchin, inspector of Longford jail [for whom McKenna carries out teaching duties] and in consequence was obliged to leave that country; continues that due to a perceived threat in his home county of Tyrone he is forced to reside in Dublin. Complains for all his labour, he received a remuneration from government of only £5 plus an additional £2 from Reverend Groves at Aughnacloy, County Tyrone; he appeals for aid to ‘afford him the means of leaving a country in which he is no longer safe and the more so as he has chosen the Established Church for his place of worship’. Also letter from McKenna to Goulburn expressing his need for a measure of assistance following provision of information against the disaffected. Insists ‘but for the imprudence of my confidential advisor [Minchin] in making a premature disclosure of my plans I would have succeeded in giving a complete check to the Ribbon System’. Also memorial from McKenna to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, seeking remuneration as reward for his part in exposing the activities of the Ribbon societies and adding at present he ‘is incapable of making a living in any part of Ireland’ on account of his disclosures.
