Also letter from Major Samson Carter, chief magistrate, Donerile, County Cork, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, acknowledging instructions to appoint Shearin to police but conveying ‘I have not the power of complying Immediately with your wishes’ due to a lack of vacancies. Also letter from Heard to the Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle, expressing view that information is not easily obtainable and offering remarks on the present incomes of the parishes of Castletownsend [Castletownshend] and Ballymartle; encloses certificate indicating that the value of the rectory and vicarage of Castletownsend is £550 per annum. Also letter from [Thomas St Lawrence, bishop of Cork and Ross] to the Chief Secretary’s Office, announcing resignation of Reverend Robert Morritt from the parish of Castlehaven, and remarking upon the value of the holding under the present state of tithe agitation; adds that a substantial protestant congregation is present in the district, the leadership of which would commend appointment of ‘a mild & respectable minister; to neither of which epitaphs I am sorry to add the late Incumbent had any claim’. |
