Letter from Reverend Edward Nixon, Church of Ireland vicar of parish of Clonard, County Meath, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, seeking financial assistance and offering description of local work scheme funded by subscription for employment of 80 local men a day on improvements to the river of Kinnegad, undertaken to prevent flooding during winter months. Encloses memorial from inhabitants of parish of Clonard and neighbourhood of Kinnegad, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, complaining of severity of poverty amongst local people and appealing for extension of monetary aid to supplement monies obtained through local subscription, which includes a gift of £25 from the marquis of Lansdowne; emphasises harshness of life due to failure of the potato crop and report that several families ‘exist on one meal of weeds in the day’; signed by Nixon and 8 other local farmers. Also draft reply expressing the Lord Lieutenant’s concern for plight of neighbourhood but regretting that he has ‘no funds at his disposal applicable to such a purpose’. Claims to make application on behalf of the son of Sir James Cotter, of Rockforest, and seeks attention of Richard Griffiths, civil engineer overseeing public works, to proposed scheme. Notes that 2 distinct advantages would arise from completion of the public works, one, that it would increase access to markets and towns of Mallow and Cork, two, that it would ‘shorten the distance from the Bank of the Blackwater to Cork’. Letter from F Macnamara, Arranview, parish of Killelagh [Killeilagh], Ennistymon, County Clare, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, calling attention to desperate circumstances of locality due to want of food and seeking intervention. Attributes suffering to a partial failure in potato crop, to an increasing population, and failure of poor smallholdings to sustain the peasantry; contends that the root of the problem is the inability of the poor to purchase provisions due to a to lack of local employment. Appeals for establishment of scheme of public works to employ starving. Also letter from Macnamara to William Vesey Fitzgerald, MP for County Clare, describing the awful plight of the poor and appealing for establishment of government employment to carry out repairs to roads in district. Comments that local people are driven to picking ‘Garden weeds’ for food and notes scarcity in supply of potatoes in the market.
