Letter from Major Samson Carter, chief magistrate of police, Cork, County Cork, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, reporting in negative terms on the claim of policeman William Farrell to compensation, following an attack by insurgents on the barracks of Churchtown on the 28th of January 1823; asserts Farrell was ‘denounced by his comrades as a Coward’ who took shelter under one of the beds. Returns memorial from Farrell, 6 Baggot Court, Dublin, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, seeking ‘remuneration for the loses he Sustained on the Night of the attack’ which he estimates at £7. Also memorial from Farrell, shoemaker, 16 South Penbroke Street, Dublin, to Wellesley, disputing the account of his conduct during the attack and seeking payment of compensation for injuries sustained during the affray; alleges that Sergeant Crossly gave ‘an unfavourable report’ of his behaviour and recounts while making his escape from the burning station ‘he was inhumanly beaten, Cut and received several Bruises’; includes handwritten commendation in his favour from Reverend Mathew Purcell, rector of Churchtown. |
