Letter from Denis Browne, [MP for Kilkenny city], County Clare, raising alarm over the potential for political instability in Ireland |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from Denis Browne, [MP for Kilkenny city], Claremont, County Clare, to [Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle], raising alarm over the potential for political instability in Ireland. Recalls the period of insurrectionary activity leading up to the 1798 Rebellion; reserving particular criticism for a disloyal publication called the ‘Northern Star’ and it’s publisher Walter Cox, whose settlement again in Ireland he strongly resists and adding that ‘if this Hatchet man is to be let loose on the loyalists of Ireland it will be a great impediment to loyalty’. Also warns of the motives of the Catholic Convention and reflects on the past life of James Joseph McDonnell, a barrister who got up in County Mayo ‘the Standard of Rebellion’ and had a large following that aligned themselves with the French army during the crisis. |
