Petition of the Bishop of Waterford and Lismore [Richard Bourke], the Duke of Devonshire [William Spencer] and the Very Reverend John Scott, dean and rector of the parish of Lismore, County Waterford, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting issue of a precept to the county sheriff to convene a jury for the purpose of ratifying an intended exchange of a portion of land owned by Devonshire called Warren Lands near the Deanary Glebe of Lismore parish, and a portion of land in the possession of Scott, known as Dean’s Glebe, ‘situate in the midst of the estate’ of Devonshire. Also report of the Attorney General [William Conyngham Plunket] to Wellesley, confirming the Lord Lieutenant has power to issue a warrant to the sheriff of Waterford ‘to call a jury of Twelve indifferent Freeholders’ for the purposes of verification, as stipulated by an act of Parliament for conveyance of crown lands. |

Noting that a number of suspected larcenists were apprehended and patrols have been increased on roads and canals in the district. Drawing attention in particular to an influx of highway robbers from Country Meath, and stating that six persons are now held in custody with a hope of securing convictions and that detection is ‘rendered extremely difficult by the reluctance of persons of the lower classes of Society to identify the offenders’. |
