Remarks her late husband Alderman Joseph Pemberton served as chief magistrate for the city of Dublin, and in all her family consist of 18 children. Also refers to careers in service of the public chosen by a number of her sons. |

SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from John Murphy, Mallow, County Cork, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting a response to a memorial in his favour for government protection following activities in pursuit of disturbers of the peace. Makes reference to having introduced Mr Curtin to Lord Doneraile [Hayes St Ledger, 3rd Viscount Doneraile], the former having successfully apprehended ‘Cotter’, for the murder of Mr Brereton in 1822. Also claims credit for arrest of the ‘notorious’ criminal ‘Sheehan’, who is presently held in custody at Dublin Castle. Annotated in pencil on back by CSO reads that a communication was made with Major Samson Carter, chief magistrate of police, Doneraile, County Cork, concerning payment of an allowance of £1 per week to Murphy. |

Letter from Robert Elliott, 12 King Street North, Dublin, late captain and adjutant, Royal Banack Infantry, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting appointment to a situation of employment under government. Acknowledges reply from Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary of Ireland, stating that the position of garrison sergeant is not a government appointment, arising from his earlier submission for work. Remarks that any information on his personal character may be obtained by reference to Sir William Stamer, police magistrate, Dublin. Also additional letter from Elliott to Wellesley, reiterating plea for a situation of employment. Refers to earlier unsuccessful application for the post of chief constable in the police establishment, and stresses his pressing need of employment. Claims to have served his king and country for near 40 years and complains of being ‘in absolute want, in debt for the common necessaries of life, with the dreary prospect of a prison before me to finish the remnant of my days’. |

Letter from Major Thomas Frederick Colby, [Royal Engineers], ordnance map office, Record Tower, Lower Castle Yard, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary of Ireland, reporting that the northern counties of Antrim, Down and Londonderry ‘offer the greatest facilities for beginning the work’ of the survey of Ireland. States importance of procuring accurate measurements in the survey and observes the board of ordnance cannot ‘direct the surveyors to insert any parts of boundaries which are not definitely marked on the ground’, 29 December 1824. Also additional letter from Colby to Goulburn, requesting that Major William Reid have permission to consult the [County] Down Survey in order to ascertain if townland boundaries recorded therein are of use in preparation of the proposed survey of Ireland, 12 November 1824. Also letter from Rowley Heyland, deputy surveyor, ordnance map office, to Goulburn, transmitting copy account of adjustments to salary in the surveyor generals office and superannuation returns [neither present]. Reports that access was afforded to Major Reid to the Down Survey and some tracings and abstracts were presented for his use. Adds he introduced Reid to John Longfield, surveyor, who provided further assistance and information, 22 January 1825. |
