Letter from James Corry, secretary, Linen Board, 15 Merrion Square, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, seeking a personal interview at behest of Baron Oriel [John Foster] and other concerned parties to discuss the issue of disallowances imposed on by the Commissioners of Accounts. Encloses copy of printed report of a meeting of the trustees of Linen and Hempen Manufacture of Ireland [dated 2 December 1823], dealing with the question of disallowances. Includes copy ‘Account of the Disallowances made by the Commissioners of Public Accounts, on the Accounts of the Trustees of the Linen and Hempen Manufactures of Ireland, for the year ending the 5th of January 1822’. Also account of expenditure by the Linen Board on salaries and ‘Utensils’ for period up to 5th of January 1823. Also printed ‘Observations on Salaries to Officers and Servants of the Linen Board of Ireland, disallowed by the Commissioners of Public Accounts to the 5th of January, 1821’. Also note on power of review exercised by the Lord Lieutenant on the matter of expenditure exclusions under the provisions of a recent act of Parliament. |

Claims his period of service was brought to a conclusion because of an inaccurate medical report from ‘an unskillful or prejudiced Doctor’ and complains of insufficient income to support his son at a local classical school. Outlines in detail the full extent of his activities as customs and excise officer which include prevention of import fraud on the brigs ‘Elizabeth’ and ‘Abionea’ as well as seizures of other illicit goods; also claims to have ‘Seized and destroyed Seven Illicit Distilleries’ and made a significant contribution to deterrence of fraud in coal imports. |
