Letter from W Montgomery, 34 Aungier Street, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, seeking appointment as out pensioner in the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, Dublin, or to veteran battalion or another post, as means of escaping local hostility over his part in the apprehension of miscreants. Complains of the ‘present critical situation’ arising from aid given to Nicholas McDonough and Lieutenant John Forbes, likely in connection with pursuit of the murderers of William McDarley and Joseph McDarley at Clonpierce, in the barony of Ballyadams, Queen’s County [County Laois]; he adds he is ‘driven by the necessity of setting or abandoning my Cottage and Farm to avoid the consequences of this unreasonable popular feeling against me’. Encloses letter from McDonough, Maryboro [Maryborough], Queen’s County, to Montgomery, expressing appreciation for assistance given and protection afforded against the mob, with especial mention of Mrs Montgomery who demonstrated a measure of ‘fortitude and resolution which seldom adherers to a female when surrounded by danger’. |
