Letter from Dr Gilbert Elliott, 15 Blessington Street, Dublin, medical doctor and licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, restating application for appointment as doctor on the convict hulk ‘Essex’ based at the Royal Harbour of George IV, Kingstown [Dún Laoghaire], County Dublin. Provides a list of references [not present], mainly from the medical fraternity, who are willing to testify to his fitness, character and qualifications, including one from the Earl of Meath [John Chambre Brabazon, 10th Earl of Meath] and Dr Alexander Jackson, the state physician. Also memorial from Elliott to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, making application for post of medial attendant on prison ship ‘Essex’ at Kingstown. Indicates his primary medical education was obtained at the University of Edinburgh and in practice he has specialised in midwifery and in the ‘treatment of the Diseases of Woman & Children’.
