Petition of Thomas Backas, [late of the city of Waterford], 74 Camden Street, Dublin, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting a situation of employment under government. Recounts details of his discovery of an insurrectionary spirit in the city of Waterford while awaiting payment of wages for his work as paper stainer in July 1803. Remarks he encountered a number of armed men, intend on uprising, who stated their intention to ‘make themselves masters of the Castle of Dublin’. Indicates his information was received at Dublin Castle and following an investigation of his character, he was offered a situation or post which he then declined. Observes that ‘party business raging so high at present in Waterford’ and on account of his giving assistance to government, he was obliged to remove to the city of Dublin. |

Recounts details of active service in the French Wars under the Duke of Wellington. Offers commentary on his own capture as prisoner of war, following the Siege of Burgos, in 1812. Reveals he was brought to Holland, and put under pressure to join the Irish Brigade, and later incarcerated in prison ‘amongst the Refuse of Mankind’. Also letter from Browne, 12 Montgomery [Foley] Street, Dublin, to Shawe, requesting appointment to vacancy in the Insolvent Court [Court for the Relief of Insolvent Debtors], Dublin, occasioned by the death of William Hyland. Refers to communication of documents relating to his outstanding claim on government and states that Lord Norbury [John Toler], Lord Chief Justice of Court of Common Pleas, will certify his qualifications for the position in question, which is worth in the region of £100 to £150 per annum, 12 April 1824. Also additional letter from Browne, 2 Lower Dorset Street, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary of Ireland, seeking a post of employment which he undertakes to fill ‘with strict Caution and Integrity’. Indicates accurate information about his person and qualification may be obtained from Lord Norbury, and from circuit judges William Johnson and Arthur Moore, 13 January 1825. |

Explains dilemma of having been personally employed as an excise officer for 24 years, only to be reduced on the establishment to half his salary; refers also to earlier service under government as post master. Complains his present income is wholly insufficient for the maintenance of his family of 9 children and a wife. Admits to having received a measure of support from benevolent friends, but complains, however, of been forced to auction ‘every article of furniture he possessed’ in order to provide for his family. |
