Petition of John Gibson, Tempo, County Fermanagh, complaining of the conduct of the local police constabulary

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of John Gibson, Tempo, County Fermanagh, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, complaining of the conduct of the local police constabulary under the command of Sergeant Beatty. Claims on the night of 26 November 1824, his residence in the village of Tempo was forcibly entered by the police. Alleges they damaged part of the house interior, mistreated his children, and removed some personal property from the dwelling. Remarks his indifference towards ‘party’ affiliations may have sparked the police invasion. Emphasises loyalty to crown and stresses he has been a resident of Tempo for near to 30 years; adds he holds a farm on the estate of Constantine Maguire, and with his father collects estate rental. Reserves particular criticism for Beatty, ‘whose years, information and experience’, he asserts ‘would not qualify him to govern his Domestics if any he ever had’. Asks that Mr Colclough, chief constable of the constabulary force make his residence in Tempo, and offer full assistance to Sir Henry Brooke and Hamilton Irvine, local magistrates, in establishing law and order.
