TITLE: |
Letter from William Edgeworth, architect and map maker, Edgeworthstown, County Longford, seeking employment on the proposed survey of Ireland |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from William Edgeworth, architect and map maker, Edgeworthstown, County Longford, to the Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle, offering his professional services in the proposed ordnance survey of Ireland. Reflects on methods employed on a recent survey carried out in Bavaria [Germany] and surmises that an Irish survey might be equally successful if completed by fully competent practitioners with good equipment. If such could be found, the work could be done for less expense ‘than if it was left to the common surveyors of the country with their needles & chains’. Mentions having responsibility for production of maps for the counties Longford and Roscommon, and speaks of practical experience gained alongside Major Thomas Frederick Colby, of the Royal Engineers, while employed on a trigonometrical survey in England. With draft reply on back from Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary of Ireland, Irish Office, Westminster, London, indicating no hope of engagement can be offered on the survey of Ireland since it has been placed in the hands of the Board of Ordnance. |
