Letter from Major George Warburton, chief magistrate of police, Castlebar, County Mayo, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, concerning the investigation of a complaint by Charles Fitzgerald, half pay lieutenant, 29th Regiment of Foot, over the conduct of Lieutenant Shea, chief constable of police in the barony of Gallen. Encloses copy letter from Fitzgerald, Foxford, County Mayo, expressing his strong objection to the behaviour of Shea, who having discovered a quantity of suspect meat in the town market sunsequently ‘abused myself, my Mother, Brother and Servants in the most Shameful and disgraceful manner, and made use of in the Public Street, in the presence of a large concourse of people, the most violent and improper language’; also alleges he witnessed Shea ‘snap a Pistol at a Boy he was chasing in the Street’. Also encloses copy of proceedings of enquiry dealing primarily with an alleged attempt made on the life of a boy by Shea; with evidence taken from Patrick Davis, David Rutledge, James Sweeny, Sylvester Shiel and Ellen Sevan, plus detail of the cross examination by Shea. |
