Letter from James H Burke, deputy mayor, Galway, County Galway, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, reporting on a complaint raised by Peter Lawless against pawnbrokers Messrs Traynor and Burke ‘for detaining an overplus on the sale of articles pawned and not redeemed when a Bill of Sale was furnished’; indicates Lawless had the case tried in court but afterwards wished to instigate a second hearing in hope of gaining a larger compensation. Also memorial from Lawless, half pay ensign, 36th Regiment of Foot, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, expressing his dissatisfaction at the decision of Burke and Manus Blake, magistrate, for allegedly failing to apply the law accurately to his claim and failing to award him full financial recompense as stipulated by an act of Parliament. Encloses abstract of an act on the subject of the regulation of pawnbrokers, with proviso that if a member of that profession refuses to pay an overplus on demand, for every offense they be obliged to ‘forfeit Treble the sum’. |
